Why Use SLX Photographic's Services?

One question that keeps coming up is, "What is the advantage of using your services, when I could buy myself a scanner and do it myself?"

If you only have a small number of slides, negatives or APS cassettes that need scanning, then the cost of purchasing the equipment will probably outweigh the cost of getting us to scan them for you. Should you have large quantities, you need to decide whether it is worth investing in a scanner and some good photo software. But the investment does not stop there. You will need to spend time to learn how to use your new scanner and software to best advantage.

Depending upon the scan resolution and post-processing operations you choose (Digital ICE, colour fade compensation, grain reduction and so on), it can take from one to several minutes to process each image through the scanner. It can then take several minutes more to clean up your scans in Photoshop or similar, and run any colour restoration and brightness / contrast adjustments before saving your final image. Even if you allow an optimistic 3 minutes per image for a low resolution scan, that's 20 an hour, or 160 in a solid 8-hour session.

We have invested in the scanning equipment and we have spent considerable time getting to grips with it. We have experimented with different scanning software packages and with Photoshop and feel we now have the right combination with Nikon hardware and VueScan software.

We are here to save you time and money (and time is money too!), even if you only ask us to do a basic scan so you can finish the job yourself in Photoshop. We do recommend that you consider at least the BasicPlus option, and let our scanners and VueScan remove the dust marks and scratches for you - this alone will save considerable time afterwards in touching up your photos or performing colour restoration.
